Senator Inhofe surveys tornado damage in Picher

Early this morning, Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.) traveled to the site of last night’s tornado to assess the damage and ensure all resources and assistance is offered. He has spoken with the Director of FEMA, Mr. David Paulison, and has been assured that FEMA will be immediately available.

Many families have moved away to escape the lead pollution, taking advantage of state and federal buyouts in recent years. The tornado — spawned by storms that also killed at least 16 people in Missouri and Georgia — could be the ultimate incentive for those 800 or so residents who have been reluctant to leave, said John Sparkman, head of the local housing authority.
